Handmade Items To Level Up Your Holiday Entertaining without Spending a Ton of Money

Updated: Feb 13, 2022

New Years Eve is this week! Can you believe it? I don’t know about you, but this year has flown by for me. Before we know it, it will be a whole new year.

With all that being said, it means we are knee-deep in the holiday entertainment season. As you plan out your menu, decor, and guest list, are you thinking about what items would make your holiday entertaining flawless this year? I’m talking about serving and display pieces that bring a level-up to your holiday decor and are practical in their application.

Now, I’m not one for silver serving trays you use only once a year. I look for items that are perfect for year-round use AND fit amazingly in an entertainment setting. These items are not always the least expensive, but as I explained in my blog, Four Things to Consider When Making a Purchase, spending a little extra ensures that it is a piece you will love for years to come.

Bring on the Food

Can I say ... my family loves to eat. We love home-cooked meals. The kind where everything is made from fresh ingredients and no one leaves the table hungry.

There is nothing better than a gathering of friends and family. Smoked turkey, my mother-in-law’s homemade stuffing, or my sister’s Lemon Artichoke Pesto Dip. I’m salivating just thinking about it. Putting together a perfect dish you know everyone will love brings more joy to the holidays.

I spoke to Veronica Dearing, chef, and owner of Nika’s Olive, a specialty olive oil store in Branson, MO, who said, “The trending items this year are all about home cooking and creative snacks. Charcuterie boards are big, but people want out-of-the-box ideas like a dessert board or snack food boards. Bread wreaths, monkey bread, pull-apart rolls in fun shapes are trending too. Of course, cookies and cocktails are king. Traditional dishes with unique flavor combinations are popping up everywhere.”

After a long two years of life not being normal, trends from holiday decor, entertaining, and food are all feeling the pull to go back to the home - home parties, traditional decor, and home cooking are all very on-trend this holiday season.

Serving Boards

As Veronica mentioned, charcuterie, bread, and snack food boards are big! They come in all types of wood varieties, sizes, and shapes. There is the perfect charcuterie board out there for every kitchen decor. I personally love the more organic ones.

When we make serving boards at Black Dog Urban Artistry, we use the uniqueness of the wood as it comes from the mill as the inspiration for the shape and size. No two charcuterie boards ever look or feel the same. Honestly, the formation and natural veining of the wood are art to me. The visual texture that God created in the wood over decades of growth is awe-inspiring. That is why we say our products are Uniquely You. You know what speaks to you, and no one will ever have one like it.

Linens

When young, my mom tried to teach me to sew. Back then, I had very little interest. As I get older, I have the desire to learn. Maybe it’s sparked by seeing my teen’s love for sewing or just a desire to make my own things. Either way, I love handmade linens—ones like this one from Charlotte Lavoie on Etsy.

Etsy has a plethora of beautiful handmade linens. The artisans who create the beautiful pieces are small businesses, and supporting them is the perfect way to add a unique touch to your holiday decor.

Liquor Service

Every great holiday party has a perfectly planned signature drink.

Whether you prefer a Pumpkin Spice Mule or something warmer like a Hot Butter Rum, you need a beautiful way to display them.

We love reclaimed barn wood. Our reclaimed barn wood trays have a beautiful texture. The metal and leather handle combination brings a touch of urban flair to the piece and makes it perfect for displaying your new drink indulgence this holiday season.
